Our Mission

Fresh Rx aims to address nutritional inequality through innovative food programs that provide both education and access to fresh healthy produce, while also supporting local family owned farms that use organic growing practices and contribute to the success of our regional food systems.

Our Vision

Everyone has access to fresh healthy produce grown with organic practices that improves their health.

Our History

What began as a candid conversation between a mother and her children’s pediatric surgeon on the role of food as medicine has evolved into a thriving non profit organization. In 2018, our founder was discussing ways that her children’s diet has improved their health with their pediatric surgeon. He noted that there is scientific evidence that links food with health, and that sadly, he comes across many youth and families who do not have the means to afford healthy foods. We learned that food banks mainly distribute processed foods ladened with preservatives, salt, and unhealthy ingredients. We wanted to offer an alternative. We wanted to start out targeting those with health conditions that would greatly improve with a better diet. From there, we launched “Farm to Patient.” Farm to Patient allows us to support local organic farmers by purchasing fresh produce that we then distribute to patients in need at low-to-no cost.

In 2019, we then discovered that children of the patients receiving the produce were unfamiliar with the fruits and vegetables they were receiving. From there, we launched “Farm to Kids.” Farm to Kids allows us to educate youth on the power of healthy eating from an early age with the added benefit of changing their health trajectory by teaching them early on about healthy choices. We found the best way to do this is through partnerships. We partner with youth serving organizations and schools to plant, maintain, and harvest community-based produce gardens. The children get hands-on experience in gardening, harvesting, and then preparing their harvest as a meal and are introduced to agribusiness as a career option. Through this program, we learned that many of the children in our program live in low-to-moderate income homes and that the produce they take home ultimately feeds their families.

Since 2018, our programs have evolved into vital components of our community that serve hundreds of youth and families each year.

In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, we temporarily pivoted and adapted our mission in response. We not only provided fresh healthy foods in our Farm to Patient program, but also to first responders who were working around the clock to safeguard those impacted by Covid-19 as well as families impacted financially by the pandemic.

Margaret was born in West Palm Beach and grew up in Florida and on a family farm in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Columbia University, she lived in India, where she became a vegetarian, studied yoga and meditation. She developed a passion for organic food and sustainable living and started a family farm to supplement her family's vegetarian lifestyle. With the help of a great team, she grew the family farm into Lox Farms, an organic principles-based community supported agricultural provider with thousands of consumers in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. She has also operated a fermentation laboratory and conducted local farm to table operations

MARGARET DURIEZ

Founder & President

Dr Stone trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As he developed his surgical practice, he observed the impact of food, movement, and psychology upon children’s recovery after an operation. In response, more than a decade ago, he co-founded Golden Spiral Foundation, providing Yoga classes to pediatric patients in the hospital. Children learn relaxation techniques to manage pain and relieve anxiety while recovering from surgery and chronic illness.

More recently, he joined Margaret Duriez to create FreshRx, an initiative that provides fresh organic fruits and vegetables at no cost to food insecure or low-income adults and children.

As co-founder, his goal is to introduce the correlation between nutrition and pro-active wellness.
